Passenger Train Development Meetings

Can you spare some time tomorrow to show your support for the expansion of passenger rail in Kansas?

The service development plan for the expansion of a train connecting KC and OKC is now complete. The legislature must authorize KDOT to press on to the next stage of development. That’s where you come in. Your presence at tomorrow’s committee meetings and at the rail caucus meeting will show that there is public support for moving passenger rail expansion and station development forward.

The Senate Meeting is set for 8:30AM in the Capitol room 152-S

The House Meeting is set for 1:30 PM in the Docking Bldg, Docking Committee Room.

The Caucus Meeting is set for 5:00 PM ( also in 152-S)

Gathering Public Input

The City of Lawrence will be offering an open house at the depot Wednesday night February 1, 2012 from 5-7 p.m. The City is seeking public input re the possibility of relocating City transit offices and the downtown transit hub to the Santa Fe Station.

After the presentation re the secondary use of the building, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Hernly Associates will seek public input, also. This is the first step to preparing construction documents for the complete rehabilitation of the Santa Fe Station. Hernly Assoc. will explain their approach to the project at 7 p.m.

We need help packing up the ornaments and lights, taking down the holiday tree and generally cleaning the station. We start at 3 p.m. and we are always done by 4:30. It's a nice get together...and purposeful!

Waiting for His Coach

Waiting for the No. 4 train is Kieran Bryant. Not pictured, but close by, was his twin brother Jacob. These six year olds contentedly played with the wooden train set on the radiant heated terrazzo floor at the Lawrence Amtrak station. Their father, Darryl Bryant, gave his sons one of the most memorable holiday treats of all time: their first train ride.

Waiting for the train at the Amtrak Station in Lawrence, KS is child's play for 6 year old Kieran Bryant. He is the son of Darryl Bryant who was en route to Ohio for a holiday family gathering. With them traveled Kieran's twin brother, Jacob who also loved playing with the wooden train set on the warm terrazzo station floor. I never saw two such excited boys when the No. 4 pulled up to give them a ride. Experiences like this as a station caretaker make the job's payback mighty.

If the snow cooperates, videographer Chuck Hatler is going to attempt to create a winter holiday video of the arrival of Amtrak's #3 train in Lawrence on Thursday December 8th. He needs volunteers to show up with their (empty) luggage at the depot at 413 E. 7th Street between 11PM and 11:30PM Thursday evening. Volunteers should dress warmly. If the train is on time, the filming should be done by midnight.

They have the potential to hurl this restoration project forward. After three years of trying to get this project on the front burner, maybe we have a little traction. Signs of the Times

These two new neon signs were installed August 15. The LAWRENCE sign is an exact duplicate of the one that was stolen about a year ago. It has a twin on the west end of the platform canopy roof.
The AMTRAK sign, while not original to the building, nevertheless is in the same font and the same size as the original SANTA FE sign over the south entrance. These signs will be on a timer and will illuminate around the arrival time of the trains.
Depot Redux has really enjoyed working with Amtrak to "rebrand" the Lawrence station.

Stan Hernly is the guy in the blue shirt and tie. He is a Lawrence architect who worked closely with Amtrak, the City of Lawrence, and Depot Redux to be sure the new platform would not negatively impact the eligibility of the Santa Fe Station getting placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Now that the new design has been approved by the FRA as well as the State Historic Preservation Office, the work on the new platform has recommenced. Watch progress on the Lawrence Train Cam.

We plan to top last year's Train Day celebration at the depot on Saturday May 7th.

Events begin at 1 p.m.and include refreshments, the entertainment of the Dave Gnojek jazz combo, and a swing dance demonstration by members of the KU Swing Society.

Of course the door prize of two, round trip, Amtrak tickets to either Chicago or St. Louis is a big draw. We hope you will support the campaign to save the station by becoming a member of Depot Redux while we celebrate Train Day together.

Platform Progress

The construction activity on the north side of the depot paused the second week in March to allow the City, Depot Redux, Amtrak and BNSF RR to tweek the platform design. The team’s goal is to preserve the historic integrity of the building while at the same time allow complete access to the trains and the station by mobility impaired passengers. The new platform will be about 14” lower than the existing pavement around the building. The re-design will accommodate the difference using a combination of continuous steps and short ramps. The new design will be reviewed by the Kansas SHPO to help mitigate the platform’s impact on the historic character of the building. We’ll keep you posted.

Award to City Being Considered

This Tuesday night, the Lawrence City Commission will consider authorizing the City of Lawrence to accept a grant from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)/Kansas Department of Transportation, in the amount of $87,563, to fund Professional Architectural Services to develop final plans for the Santa Fe Station (BNSF Depot). The City committed a $25,000 match for this project.

This award to Lawrence is quite a coup. Not many station projects were awarded funding in the first two rounds of this FRA program with funds coming through KDOT. Other projects included
– San Francisco – San Jose HSR Station Improvements
– Buffalo-Depew, NY
– Lawrence, KS
– Battle Creek, MI

Why did Lawrence receive this award?

The creation of a Rail Plan by KDOT and the promising Amtrak feasibility study for a new train connecting us to KC & OK City, plus the City and Depot Redux’s collaboration to restore our station all contributed to this award.

Now it is up to the City Commission to accept or reject the award.

Your attendance at this meeting will speak volumes to the Commission about your interest in the City accepting the award to help move the rehabilitation of the Santa Fe Station the project forward.

Great American Stations Civic Conversation in Huntington, W. VA

It is a great honor to be asked to be one of the presenters at this event. GAS strives to present projects that are in various stages of saving train stations.While our project is closer to the beginning stage than the completion stage, we have made some remarkable progress that conferees will benefit from hearing about.

Getting to Huntington and back to Lawrence will be an adventure. I will board the train 3/1/11 in Lawrence @ 5:47 a.m. and arrive in Chicago about 3 p.m. I will tour Union Station and meet with Amtrak staff until about 5 p.m. when I will settle into my roomette in the sleeper of The Cardinal. I arrive in Huntington the next morning about 10 a.m., settle into my hotel room, and rehearse my presentation with the conference coordinator after lunch. Then I will explore Huntington on foot. Dinner with other presenters and Amtrak personnel will be followed by early to bed and early to rise for the conference Thursday. Conferees will be attending from cities along the Cardinal route.

The reception following will convene in one of Amtrak's old private office cars, the historic Beech Grove. Amtrak personnel will have arrived from Washington DC with the Beech Grove trailing on the Cardinal. After the reception I board the Cardinal , crash in my roomette arriving in Chicago about 10 Friday morning. My layover there will be long enough to enjoy a couple of museums and my favorite Milleneum Park.

I already look forward to returning on the SW Chief to our welcoming station where our caretaker, Nate Anderson will have the lights on wearing his very wonderful smile.

Anti-Amtrak Amendment defeated!

An amendment to reduce Amtrak's 2011 capital grant by $446 million (Amendment No. 43, offered by Rep. Pete Sessions) failed in a House vote, with 176 "ayes" and 250 "nays." The nays included 60 Republicans, among them Rep. Bill Shuster (R-PA), chairman of the House T&I Railroads Subcommittee.

One of the things that makes Lawrence special is our historic buildings and neighborhoods. The depot at Seventh and New York is one of our crown jewels of modern architecture in Lawrence. It is eligible for listing on the Register of Historic Places. It is worthy of preservation. It is a gateway to our city, part of the infrastructure of a sustainable transportation system.

Directed by the City Commission, city management submits grant applications and pursues ownership transfer of the depot.

Amtrak is working to craft a policy allowing it to continue to be the responsible party for the ADA compliance upgrades to our station after the city assumes ownership. This move is prompted by the lobbying efforts of Depot Redux and the efforts of city management.

Depot Redux is a 501c3, not for profit, community organization with a board of directors and many paid members. In addition to its work with city management and Amtrak, Depot Redux volunteers supplement passenger services at the depot.

Fundraising efforts by Depot Redux members are promised once the city assumes ownership and receives matching grants. Citizens are more likely to support a campaign to rehabilitate the station if the city shows its support by accepting ownership.

This is a community project that requires collaboration of government, citizens, and Depot Redux. It is important to get on board before the train leaves the station (or in our case, the station leaves the train).

It's Charlie Nunez from the East Lawrence neighborhood. Charlie is delighted to be contracted by Depot Redux and Amtrak to keep the depot's parking lot cleared after winter storms. He does a fabulous job and we are grateful for his conscientious attention to the station when the snow flies. If you see Charlie, be sure to tell him "Thanks".

A cleared parking lot is one more passenger service made possible by Depot Redux, with support from Amtrak.

New Approach to Transportation Funding

President Obama could be including a big push for a new transportation bill in his upcoming State of the Union address – the speech in which he lays out his priorities for the coming year.

Make no mistake about it – this could be a major turning point for transportation. This bill is the single most important piece of legislation for surface transportation – from roads and bridges to rail and bike infrastructure.

Make sure the President follows through. Help me deliver a clear message: we can’t keep rubber-stamping the out-dated policies of the past. We need Presidential leadership in order to take a new approach to transportation funding, and we need to start now.

What's going on that has pushed the Amtrak ridership using the Santa Fe Station in Lawrence up from last year by 13%? Oh! Maybe Amtrak ridership in general is up? Indeed it is, but only by 6%.

Oh! Maybe ridership is up on the Southwest Chief, the train that stops in Lawrence. Indeed it is, but only by 8%.

Then how does one account for the fact that 1,100 more people used Lawrence's Santa Fe Station for Amtrak travel in 2010 than used it in 2009?

Other good news: We are in contact with BNSF and Amtrak re the upgrades to the station's platform as well as new signage. These two projects are expected to begin on the station next month.

A Significant Sign

For those of you who can't navigate the comments feature of each blog post, here is a guest post by Russell Behrends. He submitted the image below and speaks about its personal meaning.

I remember back....oh, 10 years ago when I first moved into town. I chose to live in Lawrence when I got a job in Topeka. I didn't know anyone, so I spent time going around town getting to know the lay of the land, getting to feel the vibes of the town. I signed up for a photography class at the Lawrence Arts Center. One of the first pictures I ever took was a B/W picture of that Lawrence sign at the Amtrak station. The sign spoke out as to welcome me. I developed that photo and enlarged it. It was the first picture that I hung at my new home in my new town. After that, it felt like I was really a part of the town.

I have always seen the sign as a symbol of pride for the town. When friends come to visit...it is always one of the first things I take them to.

I will be very proud to see this sign once again, on the Amtrak Station, illuminated in all its glory, saying "Welcome to our great town! Take a look around, enjoy yourself...and stay awhile".

It is with great sadness that we report missing from the Santa Fe Station in Lawrence, KS: one of the two original neon signs identifying the station stop. The missing sign was located at the east end of the depot's platform canopy. It was removed without authorization.

This loss strikes deep into the heart of this community restoration project of the Santa Fe Station. Amtrak had recently chosen the Lawrence station to be the recipient of costly new signage including restoration of both of the origianl neon signs. Now, only one of the signs can be restored because the other has been taken from the site.

Mayor Amyx and the four other City Commissioners will consider the matter of the Santa Fe Station ownership transfer from the BNSF RR to the City of Lawrence.

Next Tuesday, Aug. 24, City Manager David Corliss will ask the Commissioners for direction. In lieu of the City's failure to win a Transportation Enhancement grant for the repair and restoration of the Amtrak station, staff is asking for direction re pursuing the ownership transfer which is quite close to completion.

Funding the Station's Restoration

Yesterday the City of Lawrence, Department of the City Manager, received word from KS Dept of Transportation that the project to restore the Santa Fe Station in Lawrence was not awarded a Transportation Enhancement grant. Although cited as a worthwhile project, the fact that the station was not yet owned by the City and not on the Register of Historic Places were the reasons given for the weakness of the application.

While this is disappointing news, Depot Redux will continue to work with the City to procure the station and to explore other funding options for the station's restoration.

Depot Reopened

After being shuttered for almost two weeks, the Santa Fe Station has reopened for the midnight train. Depot Redux was delighted to find a caretaker with high level skills and availability for the midnight train. Nathan Anderson's winning smile and gentle spirit contribute to the welcoming atmosphere that passengers and Amtrak crew have grown to expect from the Lawrence stop.

Here is what Nate has to say about his new job:
So far I'm having a blast as the caretaker for the #3 train. It's interesting to find out where people are headed (or returning from) and why they chose the train rather than a car or plane. Last night, a couple that I had met when Carey was training me Thursday morning, alighted from the train. It was great to be able to have the opportunity to send them off and welcome them back. Fun stuff. It's great to be part of the Depot Redux.

It is with regret that we will be losing depot caretaker John Dreiling. John faithfully and dutifully met the midnight train for seven months. Amtrak staff and passengers enjoyed the half hour layover at the Lawrence station more because of John's hospitality. John implemented a modest concessions service supplied with soda by Depot Redux volunteer Carol Jean Brune.

Great Day at the Santa Fe Depot

Depot Redux member Gary Knudsen wowed these little junior conductors with his presentation about steam locomotive No. 1073. This was part of Depot Redux's Train Day events on May 8.

Over one hundred supporters flocked to the depot to tour the station, give donations, join as Depot Redux charter members, hear the musicians, guest speaker and to win prizes. It was a joyous way to celebrate the second anniversary of Depot Redux and the 141st anniversary of the nailing in of the golden spike connecting the Trans Continental Railroad.

A Lenexa resident, Peter is the editor of Railroad History, a correspondent for Trains magazine, and an on-air source for CBS News and NBC News. He will be the featured speaker at the National Train Day celebration in Lawrence, KS, Saturday May 8 at 3 p.m. at the Amtrak Station, 413 E. 7th Street.

Hansen’s talk is titled “The Hometown Depot in American Life,” a theme that dovetails with the mission of Depot Redux. “In pre-automotive America,” he writes, “anyplace that was anyplace had a railroad and a hometown depot. As Americans have begun to reconnect with their past, they’ve often focused on these structures as touchstones, and with good reason. If you know what to look for, depots say a lot about the railroads that built them, the cities for which they were built, and our ancestors who rode the trains. Big Day in Topeka Tomorrow

The Amtrak Expansion Feasibility Study is complete. The results will be announced at a KDOT press conference at 10 a.m. in Auditorium B (or D, to be announced) on the 4th floor of the Eisenhower Building. It is 2 blocks north of the capitol.

After the press conference, members of the Northern Flyer Alliance will meet with Transportation Secretary Deb Miller to further explain the results of the study.

At 1:30 KDOT will make a presentation about the study results to the joint House and Senate Transportation Committees on the 7th floor of the Docking Bldg. in Transp. Comm. hearing room (probably Rm 783).

This is Senator Dwayne Umbarger, chair of the Senate Transportation Committee. If you want to expand passenger rail services in Kansas, write him immediately. A sample letter can be found on the Northern Flyer Alliance's website: www.northflyer.org. His committee is considering a bill (SB 409) that will establish a revolving fund for the development of passenger rail services in KS. The establishment of this fund is necessary to let the Federal Railroad Administration know that Kansas is poised to receive federal dollars to establish passenger rail services. Depot Redux chair, Carey Maynard-Moody, gave testimony in support of this bill to the Senate Transportation Committee Wednesday Feb. 3rd.

What's a siding? (It's not vinyl.)

With all this talk about sidings, many depot restoration fans wonder what they are. A siding is a short stretch of railroad track used to store train locomotives and cars or "rolling stock", which enables trains on the same line to pass. As the freight railroads now run much longer trains than in the past, many sidings are too short for freight trains to use in order to allow Amtrak trains pass. Return on Investment Study Complete

The Return on Investment Study you read about on this blog in October is complete and has some good news. Although the news has not appeared in the Lawrence Journal World as of this posting, it has appeared here. An expansion of passenger rail service between Oklahoma City and Kansas City, with a stop in Lawrence, could generate $3.20 in regional economic impact for every $1 invested, according to the study.

We hope that the Jayhawk study will garner support in the KS State legislature for a bill that would authorize KDOT to develop expanded passenger rail services and create a fund for federal money to pass through to support the expansion.

Congratulations goes to Northern Flyer Alliance KS president Deborah Fischer Stout and OK president Evan Stair for conceiving of this study. They engaged Jayhawk Consulting to conduct it and the Weidemann Foundation in Wichita to fund it.

This is Junior Conductor Jordeah Grosko from Excelsior Springs, MO. She is punching her brother's ticket as he boards the Southwest Chief in Lawrence. Not really. They borrowed the conductor's gear and hammed it up for the photographer when the train was waiting to depart.

Gabriel and Jordeah are great fans of Amtrak Conductor Eric Peterson, pictured below. Eric went out of his way to make the Gosko kids' trip to Dodge City a memorable one.

One of the pleasures of the Lawrence depot caretaker John Dreiling is that he gets to know Amtrak staff as their layover in Lawrence is about a half hour every night. He learned that several of them are musical. Eric plays keyboard and Conductor Bailey plays the guitar. Maybe this summer they can give us a different kind of "On Time Performance".

Depot Redux Chair Honored for Group’s Accomplishments

Carey Maynard-Moody, chair of Depot Redux, has been selected as one of eight “2009 Distinguished Kansans” by the Topeka Capital Journal. The paper cited Maynard-Moody for her accomplishments in preserving and improving Lawrence’s Amtrak passenger station at 7^th & New York Streets.

“I’m extremely honored to have been selected,” said Maynard-Moody. “I think this honor belongs to the entire Depot Redux group – everyone who has worked so hard to protect and enhance the station.”

“I think there’s a growing recognition of the importance of passenger rail as an energy-efficient alternative,” Maynard-Moody added. “Restoring historic stations such as ours and keeping them clean and safe can aid immensely in making rail travel attractive again.”

The historic Lawrence depot, which was built in 1955 for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, is the finest example of Mid-Century Modern architecture in the area. It has been declared eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

Since its formation in 2008, Depot Redux has worked to beautify the station through volunteer cleanup days, and to staff the building for train arrivals and departures. During the summer months, Depot Redux sponsored “On-Time Performances” at the station, live music events corresponding with the arrival of the westbound Amtrak Southwest Chief. The group is also working with Amtrak, Burlington Northern Santa Fe (the building’s owner), and the City of Lawrence to obtain public ownership of the building. This would insure the preservation of the historic depot and promote its best use.

Wise men, women and children chose Amtrak for holiday travel because they know they will get there safely and comfortably.

Happy Holiday Travelers Get There by Train

Keisha wants to help her grandmother plan their next Amtrak vacation. While she waits for her grandmother's train, she studies the Amtrak Vacation Planner.

She seems to appreciate the furniture at the Santa Fe Station in Lawrence, too. The depot caretaker, and photographer, John Dreiling, notes that the chairs are as comfy today as they were when the station opened 53 years ago.

But Keisha's brother, four year old Erwin, is not too smitten with the comfort of the Amtrak junior conductor's caps.

For the last 8 years, Amtrak travelers Reyna, right, and her grandson Marcos, left, have been traveling by train to San Diego to enjoy the holidays with family. According to John Dreiling, Erwin's smile faded as he tearfully said goodbye when his big brother boarded the train. Maybe depot caretaker Butin will get to see Erwin's smile return when Reyna and Marcos alight from the No. 4 train after the holidays.

What was decided at the City Commission Meeting ?

The City Commission voted to cautiously move ahead with the project by seeking only half of the total cost of preserving the depot. The above conceptual drawing features some new parking east of the train station and an expansive garden to the west. If Lawrence is awarded the Transportation Enhancement grant from KDOT this June, unfortunately beautification such as this garden and parking upgrades will not be on the list to receive funding. They are not critical. A new roof, upgraded heating and cooling and ADA compliant doors and bathrooms will be part of the this first phase of the depot's preservation. It will be two more years before the City can apply for TE funding to help pay for the cost of the remaining work.

City Commission to Hear Reports

The Lawrence City Commission will receive Phase 1 Architectural Report from Hernly Associates Tuesday December 8 at their regular meeting.

The Commission meets in their chambers on the first floor of City Hall at 6:35 on Tuesday evenings.

The depot item is 5th on the agenda, so it could be late in the evening before the item is heard. However, if you want to hear Stan Hernly's presentation to the Commission, the Commissioners' questions he anwers, but you'd rather not leave home, you can do both by tuning in channel 25 Cable TV.

This agenda item not only asks the City Commissioners to accept the report, but it also asks them to approve the City's application for a grant from KDOT. This grant is for Transportation Enhancement funds for the Santa Fe Station preservation work.

John Dreiling Meets the Midnight Train

John Dreiling has been greeting the midnight train (No. 3) since September 2009. He opens the depot at about 11:45 p.m. Thurs-Mon night and locks it up after the train leaves and the passengers have cleared out. I had some questions for John. His responses will be of interest to veteran as well as new Amtrak riders.

Interview with John Dreiling, Santa Fe Station Caretaker, Lawrence, KS midnight train (Amtrak No.3)

CMM: Why did you apply for the job of depot caretaker?

JD: I am interested in passenger train travel because I am disenchanted with automobile travel: the safety, the expense and the discomfort I feel while driving, all give me pause. I am enchanted with the idea that we Americans can head towards an alternative transportation system that prevails in the rest of the world and prevailed in our own country, half a century ago. That we might be going "back to the future," with expanded passenger rail travel is a theme that is expressed by Depot Redux, and I find it intriguing.

CMM: Unlike the early morning train, the midnight train (No. 3) lays over at our station for about a half hour every night. What are the pros and cons of this aspect of your job as caretaker?

JD: My job at the depot has meant that I must begin my work day several hours earlier because my other job demands I begin work at 3 a.m. It’s a pretty good fit.

I have much more time to talk with conductors, train engineers on occasion, and with passengers than Jan (the caretaker for the morning train) has. I get a greater feel for the whole passenger train community and the issues facing passenger rail traffic in the US because I have more time with staff and passengers.

Some passengers who get off the train to stretch, have never set foot on Kansas soil before. I enjoy hearing their reflections. One Californian who stepped off the train for about 20 minutes knew only one thing about Lawrence KS: the 1982 television movie "The Day After" was filmed here. He recalled a line from the movie, "Hello, this is Lawrence, Kansas calling. Is anybody out there, anybody at all?"

CMM: You’ve been on the job now for a few months now. What have been the biggest surprises for you?

JD: I have not been extremely surprised about anything so far. Let me repeat that, "So far."

CMM: Where do you find satisfaction in your job?

JD: It is rewarding to hear passengers say they appreciate the station being illuminated and clean when they are boarding or arriving on Amtrak. Many mention that the depot and surrounding environment were not so pleasant from their previous experience at this depot.

I enjoy teaching passengers about “Julie”, Amtrak’s automated telephone agent. It wasn't so long ago that I rode Amtrak for the first time. I didn't know about telephoning Amtrak for train status and I ended up waiting two to three hours for the train to arrive. Had I known about the delay by calling “Julie”, I could have gotten a few more hours of sleep.

When I substitute for the No. 4 train caretaker in the morning, I enjoy tasks like reminding boarding passengers to be out of their automobiles and ready to board before the train arrives. This is a new routine for passengers who are use to the layover of the midnight train. They think all trains layover in Lawrence. NOT TRUE!! These passengers would otherwise be surprised when the train leaves without them because they weren’t out on the platform with their luggage waiting to board when the train pulled in.

It is gratifying to be able to act on simple requests that passengers have, such as having snacks or soda at the Depot, having newspapers for people who have been on the train for several days and wonder what's been going on in the world.

It’s satisfying to be helpful in other ways, too, like to inform passengers who need city transportation about the “T” bus service or Greyhound for other travel.

CMM: Amtrak promises all depot caretakers a “Learning Quest” –type trip on the Southwest Chief. This trip is provided to allow you to gain a better understanding of what Amtrak passengers experience so you can better help them anticipate their trip as you wait with them for their train. Your gratis Amtrak trip on the Chief can take you to any destination along the route and back. What will your destination be? Why?

JD: Each direction has its attractions. I would like to see several of the Depots going west that I have heard so much about, like Garden City, KS and Albuquerque NM. On the other hand, I would like to go back to Galesburg, IL. Or perhaps I will go to Chicago, which is a big rail hub for the US. I haven't decided yet.

CMM: Is there anything you want to tell perspective Amtrak passengers that would help improve their pleasure and ease of travel?

And the conductors and attendants on board are knowledgeable professionals. They have plenty of time to answer questions when Amtrak #3 rolls into Lawrence.
